Why do teeth get discoloured?

There are many reasons why teeth can discolour, simple things like drinking tea, coffee, red wine and other food or drink with strong colourants.

Smoking is another major cause, which can result in a yellowed appearance of the teeth.

As people grow older their teeth can become darker naturally. Tooth decay, fillings & tartar build-up can also contribute to discolouration. Teeth have nerves & blood vessels in them if these become damaged the tooth can become darker. Some types of staining can be caused by certain diseases or medicines.

What can be done?

To improve tooth appearance, there are many simple ways to help discoloured teeth. From reducing the consumption of such food/drinks, stop smoking and or have regular dental hygiene care to remove any surface build-up of tartar and stains.

Regular tooth brushing with toothpaste will help to reduce superficial stains, changing the natural tooth colour will require a personalised prescribed whitening system (tooth whitening)

From your assessment we will:

Principles of Therapy

Tooth whitening is a well-established procedure in cosmetic dentistry. Carbamide peroxide has been safely used for many years in the treatment of gums and other oral soft tissue.

Our home care kit is a safe and effective tooth whitening system. The whitening gel is a thick solution, which is easily dispensed to patients by a dentist and applied by the patient at home using a clear and inconspicuous custom fitted tray. The gel is worn overnight while you sleep, for ultimate performance and maximum convenience. In only 10-14 nights you can achieve exceptional whitening results.

The whitening process is effective on most discoloured teeth, darker stains, such as those caused by antibiotics may take longer to respond to treatment. The degree of whiteness will vary from patient to patient depending on the structure of the teeth, the number of applications or the duration of time the system is used.
